Peace Studies 4G03 Peace and Health: Praxis
In 2019, our seminar will focus on the connection of water and peace and health, as a contribution to the work of the General Assembly of the United Nations and the resolution ‘International Decade (2018–2028) for Action – Water for Sustainable Development’.
Sustainable management of water and sanitation underpins global efforts to end poverty and sustain peace and stability. Advancements in nutrition, health, and international cooperation in environmental protection are related to the availability and sustainability of water and effective sanitation systems. We will explore citizen engagement from local to international scales, and the role of civil society, in advancing peace and health by aligning with the UN to place water at the centre of peace and health strategies.
We welcome the participation of Dr. Nancy Murray of Health Sciences at McMaster, who will contribute from her first-hand experience as a citizen, at the 2018 United Nations’ High-Level Political Forum ‘Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies’: Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 with a focus on Goal #6 Water.
Student contributions will include individual and collaborative project based learning assignments, and class attendance and possible participation in events to celebrate World Water Day, and an international conference on Water Security and Peace. All students are welcome to consider this course.
